When I first heard about affirmations, I was skeptical, VERY skeptical. I thought that they were just another gimmick, more psychobabble so to speak. Because of this, I chose to ignore them and without knowing it, I hindered my progress. I thought that if I ignored them for long enough, they would just go away like most fads do. I waited but they remained in the public eye. Books have been written, most successful influencers use them and they are splashed all over social media (sometimes so very subtly that you could miss them!
Because I was open to change, I decided to give them a go. After all, I had nothing to lose (except weight obviously!!). From the moment I started, my life began to change. At first it was not easy and I felt uncomfortable even. It was also very embarrassing but I persevered. It was very subtle at first but then glaringly obvious that they were working. I began to see the good in me, the potential and not the negatives and the failures. I started to focus on possibility and not hopelessness of my situation. Most importantly, I began to believe that I could achieve my weight loss goals!
You may be like the old me, the one who doubted that it would work, the one who thought the only way to lose weight was to follow a restrictive diet. I’m here to tell you that if I can do it, so can you! All you have to do is start. It does not matter that you do not believe they work, it doesn’t matter if you feel awkward, all that matters is that you try.
The best way to use affirmations is to say them out loud at your reflection in the mirror. Obviously it won’t always be practical to do so and when this is the case:
- Think the affirmations
- Write down the affirmations
- Listen to affirmations
- Have affirmations around your environment on photos, calendars, post it notes etc!
Use affirmations numerous times during your day
For added positivity, smile! A word of caution – Just as positive affirmations should produce positive results, negative affirmations produce negative results! Only use positive affirmations!! If you think about it, every time you say or think anything negative about yourself, you are using negative affirmations without even knowing it. Be guarded from now on and if you ever catch yourself doing this, STOP immediately and replace the negative phrase with a positive one.
